feet below the sagebrush country of central Nevada was 50 times more powerful than the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 The earth shook 200 miles away from ground zero in San rancisco while the tremor also rolled north ward and rattled windows in downtown Salt Lake City Government officials declined to give the exact mag nitude of the device but it was believed to be the largest US explosion since 1966 when a similar project regis tered in the intermediate yield range The test was conducted to aid in the acceleration of the US underground thermonuclear explosion program The test dubbed was conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission which is looking for a suitable area to experiment with the biggest underground nuclear weapons ever tested by this country The government rigged a network of 90 seismo graphs ranging from 90 to several hundred miles from ground zero to record shock waves US 6 which runs through Hot Creek Valley was closed by rock slides Some bridges showed minor cracks At the test site a snow and dust storm billowed hundreds of feet in the air and could be seen 20 miles away after the explosion US Public Health Service officials said no atmospheric radiation reported in January 1967 that the Army shipped four steam locomotives to the Thai land government without first determining whether they would perform the function for which they were intended They When last heard from said GAO the Army was potential for the $23 million worth of locomotives Early in the 1967 fiscal year GAO reported that the Army had 52000 too many beds and plan ned to sell them The Navy and Air orce had asked for new beds but did not want the surplus stock because it was a different type When the two services heard that the GAO was looking into the case they quickly changed their mind and took 271000 of the extra beds and the GAO said this was a savings of $106 mil lion for the taxpayer Before GAO came on the scene how ever 250000 beds had already been disposed of and
