Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

Even though we graded this facility incredibly poorly overall, it received a better long-term care score this year. We gave it a B- in that category, which was the closest thing to a bright spot we can find for this facility. Long-term care grades assess a facility's assistance with daily living instead of the highly skilled nursing or medical services that are critical to a skilled nursing facility. On top of considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 99.6 percent of its residents. Lastly, this facility was also able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Facility Inspections

Grade: B-minus

This nursing home actually performed well in the area of inspections also. In fact, we gave it a grade of B- for this category, which is a respectable grade. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining our inspection grades. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some end up being quite minor. While this place had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.

Nurse Quality

Grade: D

We were surprised to find that this facility also excelled in the area of nursing. We awarded it an impressive grade of D for that category, which is one of our best grades. Our nursing grade is based on a host of factors. The most heavily weighted one is the quantity of hours nurses spend with patients. This facility provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Lastly, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing grades. This nursing home fared well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these datapoints to be reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: F

The last area we graded was short-term care, in which this nursing home received an abysmal grade here as well. It received an abysmal F in this category, which is obviously somewhat alarming. Our short-term care grade is commonly employed to gauge a nursing home's rehabilitation services. To have quality rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to feature higher levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. With its score in this area, we were not surprised to learn that this nursing home was well below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours offered to its residents based on the data we looked at. Honestly, this was what we expected to find. Finally, we assessed the percentage of residents who who were able to eventually return home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 4.3 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
